Ok so I found out about Nothing For Design on Friday, which is this Elsinore album from 2006 (they are said to have started in 2004). I saw only one review for it which totally chewed it apart, so I assumed it would suck but it’s actually really good??? I listened to it on Spotify.
Like people were shitting themselves over Yes Yes Yes when it’s pretty listless and no matter what state of mind I’m in I don’t listen to. Push/Pull was a step up. But I swear these reviews are so fake. People are just writing that because no one would dare criticize a big thing in Champaign Urbana. My mom said a lot of bands stuck in small towns with environments that don’t appreciate what they’re playing go downhill.
I really like Nothing For Design a lot better. The songs are bouncy and pretty and …down to earth. I love how the piano sounds like piano and the guitar like a guitar. They’re songs I could play myself. Instead of being sound effects they’re sounds. I mean sound effects are cool but with how great these songs without it sound …
Ryan Groff’s voice sounds really good in them too, although I think the vocalizations sound a little awkward like he still needed to work on the sound of them.
This is my favourite one of their songs, Cannonballs. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8Yloi60ATM ) The beginning is a bit rough lyrics-wise but it quickly becomes one of the prettiest songs I’ve heard. And I’m not too sure about the last line of the chorus but I really love this song. Although it’s five minutes, it definitely feels like it ends too soon. One of those songs that when you’re at a show hearing it you want to keep the melody in your head and sing it to yourself for the rest of the night. I wouldn’t cut out any part of it to make it shorter.
